A listserv is a highly mechanized and formal way of getting information to a large number of people without having to attach a long list of e-mail addresses in the header.
The entire process is centralized and the listserv maintains the subscriber/member list.
If you are not yet subscribed to YBAN's listserv, we recommend that you create an AYA e-mail account that is linked to a personal e-mail address. For instructions on how to do this, please click here.
Once you have set this up, simply send a blank e-mail message to:
If you have chosen NOT to request subscription to the listserv via an AYA e-mail account, you must identify yourself by stating 1) your full name (maiden name, if applicable) and 2) your Yale affiliation (e.g., CC '92).

The YBAN listserv is primarily for the transmission of Yale-related news, information, inquiries, and correspondence.
To post an e-mail message to the listserv simply send an e-mail to the listserv address: [email protected]. The listserv then forwards it out to each individual in the subscribership/membership.
The individual addresses of members are never revealed. The only address visible is that of the sender.
We recommend not
subscribing to YBAN via your work e-mail address. Of course, it's your
call, but please remember that it is perfectly legal (and all too
common) for your employer to read your e-mail messages. So, if you want
to avoid this possibility, please join up via an virtual AYA e-mail account.
Individuals may subscribe and unsubscribe themselves from the list at any time (For instance, if you are going out of town and don't want your mailbox cluttered) -- See #6. SUBSCRIBE OR UNSUBSCRIBE AT WILL.
1. EVERY posting transmitted via the listserv must contain: a) a clear & specific title in the subject header, and b) must conclude with the sender's full name and Yale affiliation (e.g., "John Doe TC '87). (Example: If you are looking for an apartment in New York starting in the month of August, a good e-mail title would be: "ISO apt. in NYC starting 8/04" and not: "Looking for place to live".)
2. NO MESSY HEADERS IN FORWARDED MAIL. When you are forwarding outside mail to the Listserv be sure to DELETE all the forwarding addresses from the header.
3. THE SUBSCRIBERSHIP TO THE LISTSERV IS PRIVATE! Please do not give out the personal e-mail addresses of members/subscribers without the individual's permission.
4. To receive a daily digest of YBAN listserv e-mail activity, please send a BLANK e-mail message to:
[email protected].
In so doing, you will not receive the occassional flurry of e-mails that occur periodically around a hot topic, etc.
5. NO FORWARDING OF YBAN MAIL TO NON-MEMBERS (WHO ARE NOT BLACK ALUMS). Do not forward e-mail
from the YBAN Listserv to non-listmates unless it is a general posting
which contains no personal information about any YBAN members. In the
event that you do forward a generic YBAN posting to an outsider, make
sure the YBAN listserv address has been delted from the e-mail first!
6. SUBSCRIBE OR UNSUBSCRIBE AT WILL. You can subscribe or unsubscribe
from YBAN at any time. Simply send a BLANK e-mail message to: [email protected]. These instructions are contained in the signature of every e-mail message sent via the listserv.
7. Do NOT send e-mail messages whose text is in ALL CAPS. According to Internet etiquette (aka “netiquette”), “netiquette”. Thus, by writing or forwarding messages in ALL CAPS, you may be inadvertently suggesting to fellow alumni that you are indeed yelling at them — which we assume would defeat the purpose of you wanting to effectively communicate with folks on the list.
8. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you give out the e-mail address of
the listserv. By doing so you will be giving an outsider privileged
access to our membership in violation of their privacy. If you are
facilitating access to YBAN on behalf of a third-party, please refer
them to [email protected].
9. Remember, posting to the listserv go to ALL subscribers!!! So,
please use discretion and your best judgment when deciding on what to
post and to whom! (In other words, take a deep breath before hitting that intoxicating Send button.)
